Keeping it simple...

I have always recorded on a budget, and this time is no exception. My wife bought me a laptop a couple of years ago, and since then I have been updating my old programs. I purchased Sibelius for writing music and this has been fantastic for getting musical ideas down, so they can be kept or played by others.

For the recording software I was looking at Cubase, but wanted to give DAW software a go first, before making the quite expensive leap. So I purchased Magix Studio software.

I also needed to update my outboard hardware kit. I needed to keep this affordable and ended up purchasing a Behringer mixer with two phantom powered mic inputs and several line inputs.

This is connected to an A-to-D converter (Behringer again). I was amazed with the quality of these units and they have certainly excelled in their job.

Many years ago I purchased a pair of matched condenser microphones and a good vocal condenser.

I already had a Shure 58 and a couple of Sennhiser 313's.

I also have a couple of Behringer monitors. These are really very good for their size and price.

So with all this I have started laying down the basic guitar parts for some songs.

This has been punctuated with hospital appointments and tests following my course of radiotherapy throughout March/April/May.

Getting my head around DAW software

I know it is 2014 and DAW software (Digital Audio Workstation) has been around for some time, but I have finally re-bitten the bullet and started working on some tracks with Magix Studio.

I used to use Cubase many years back (I had it running on a Windows 98 system, it was in the 90's) and found it great, but had issues with latency and background noise. However, the initial tests on this are looking very promising. This is me dipping my foot into the digital (DAW) water.

If this works out well I will get Cubase again as it was really good before, and I found it simple to use. Because I have always recorded on a budget, this would be quite a large outlay, so for the moment I will play with the Magix software. I have just started getting my head around MIDI too!

So far, so good. I have managed to get some guitar and bass parts down. The ability to 'drop in' fluffed parts is so much simpler that on the old dedicated recording system.

The really good news was that I had a recording on my old system, but wanted to bring it into this software. Then I found a free piece of software on a chat room for the studio system that would take a backup disk and break it into all the audio tracks. It was so simple to use and it worked|

Looking for the backup for an old recording I have, as I would really like to re-learn the bass part from it.
